Workshop Introduction
Each summer the Kyujanggak Institute offers graduate students and other young researchers in Korean Studies the opportunity to study with the top scholars in the field at Seoul National University. Held this year from July 6 to July 17, the 2009 Summer Workshop will cover the following eight areas: classical literature, contemporary literature, pre-modern history, modern history, sociology, linguistics, Confucianism, and Buddhism.
The workshop will comprise of morning lectures and afternoon discussions based on the reading material. In addition, private office hours will be held by leading professors in the field for the benefit of all participants.
In response to the evaluations given by previous participants, all reading material and lectures will be in Korean. There is a 25 person limit on the workshop. Participants should be graduate students or junior scholars of Korean Studies based either abroad or in Korea. Acceptance will be evaluated based on the participant’s application.
Program
I. Morning Lectures: “Methodologies of Korean Studies”
Morning lectures will focus on documentary and digital resources for Korean Studies research and methods of use. Lectures will address the types of available primary and secondary sources – including use of databases and archives—that form the foundation of Korean Studies research.
II. Afternoon Seminars: “Current Issues in Korean Studies”
Individual seminars on topics in Korean Studies will consist of directed discussion on the latest research and issues in each of the eight subjects. |

Registration
The registration fee is W 500,000. Scholarships are available. The registration fee will cover tuition, meals and banquet, course-pack, and field-trip expenses.
*The lodging fee is separate; lodging may be arranged at a local residence inn near the university.
Financial assistance
Five fee-waiving grants and five travel grants worth W 500,000 are available. If you wish to apply for a grant, please include a letter of recommendation from your academic advisor specifying why your merit/need the grant.
